“Nearly a year ahead of schedule, the Kennedy tunnel will be inaugurated, a work that will unite the Perez Zujovic bridge sector with Américo Vespucio in Las Condes. The bridge is part of the Santiago Centro-Oriente Plan that builds the concessionaire Costanera Norte and seeks to improve the vehicular flows of that sector. This was stated on Friday by the Minister of Public Works, Alberto Undurraga, who inspected the progress of the work carried out some 30 meters underground. The minister detailed the new dates and the technology used to accelerate the construction process, which is based on the operation of a formwork traveller that operates on rails and advances about 15 meters per day. “It is a work that was initially scheduled to end at the end of 2018. We have changed the construction method with these trains that make the concrete lining, which will allow it to have it running during this year 2017,” said the MOP head. The new Kennedy tunnel, which has a 68% advance in works, will be extended by 1.2 kilometers in length and represents an investment of US $ 148 million. The work will increase the capacity of Kennedy Avenue by 50%, with flows of 8,500 vehicles per hour.
